Sedation Dentistry
Most people have a normal fear of dental treatment. It is neither pleasant nor fun, and the mouth is a very sensitive area. Some people have difficulty getting numb, while others have been hurt or traumatized after being told to “hold on a little longer”. Some people have been ridiculed or humiliated by friends and professionals because they cannot “take it”. Some people have a very bad gag reaction, making it impossible to have anything done. They have avoided the dentist for years, and many believe that a beautiful smile or the ability to chew food comfortably is something they can never have. If you see yourself in this description, sedation dentistry may be just what you need.
Sedation allows you to have your dental work done while your mind is in the “Twilight Zone”. You will not be totally asleep (just very, very drowsy), but you will have no pain and remember little, if anything, about the time you spent in the chair. Sedation is also excellent for people who want to get a lot done in one visit, but don’t want the discomfort of being in the dental chair all day.
You will be given one pill to take before coming to the office. Upon arriving, we will connect you to a monitor so that I can record your blood pressure, pulse, and blood oxygen level during treatment. Your safety and comfort are my primary concern. If necessary, more medication is given to ensure a smooth visit. The medication is a sleeping pill called Triazolam, a member of the Valium family. It has been used safely and effectively for years, and wears off rapidly. This method of sedation is very safe and predictable.
I understand this is a very big step for many people. There is no need to feel embarrassed or blame yourself. Pain and fear are very real. I am dedicated to helping people get a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile, not lecture them about the past. Whatever the condition of your mouth, modern dentistry can help you to lead a better life. Sedation dentistry makes it easy to get what you want and need.
